LAKE STEVENS — One day.
After two months of highly contested matches and tiring practices, it came down to one day to decide the Wesco North divison winner.
Three teams — Snohomish, Lake Stevens and Monroe — entered the day tied for first at 7-2 in league and at the end of it, two
were left as Wesco North co-champions.
Led by its depth along its front line, Lake Stevens (8-2 league, 10-4 overall) defeated Monroe in four sets by scores of 25-17, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-23 to earn its first No. 1 seed in nearly 20 years, according to its coach Amy Wiklund.
The other co-champion, Snohomish, defeated Stanwood but will be the No. 2 seed as a result of tiebreaker procedures that took place prior to the beginning of the season.
“It’s been a long time coming for Lake Stevens volleyball,” Vikings head coach Amy Wiklund said, referencing the near two decade span between one seeds. “My girls are super excited for this. They have been working their tails off all year.”
Mckayla Huntley had eight kills and six blocks, Kylie Hall added six kills and five aces and Molli Drivdahl provided 40 assists to lead the Vikings.
Monroe (7-3, 10-4) was led by junior Melina Seabrook who had 18 kills while teammate Kendal Munoz added 14 assists and 13 kills.
“It was a tough match,” added Wiklund. “Each team had its moments of being in control of the match. The last match was super tight, back and forth the whole way. It came down to a great swing on the ball and a block by us.”
Now with a No. 1 seed under its belt, Lake Stevens will attempt to make a strong postseason run. Wiklund likes her team’s chances.
“I feel like these girls have played through some adversity this season,” said Wiklund. “They’ve got some confidence and hopefully that will carry them through the top side of the bracket rather than the (consolation) side. I’m excited.”
