Lake Stevens wins battle for second in Wesco North

Herald staff

LAKE STEVENS – Lindsey Frietag’s one-run double in the first inning helped Lake Stevens foil Mount Vernon’s bid for a season sweep and the inside track for second place in the Western Conference’s North Division.

Frietag’s hit gave Lake Stevens all it needed to defeat Mount Vernon 4-3 on Thursday.

“If we would have won, we would have a solid hand on second place,” Mount Vernon coach Alan Williams said. “We would have had an advantage. But it just didn’t work out.”

Lake Stevens (9-2 in league, 9-2 overall), which lost 3-2 to Mount Vernon earlier in the season, took over second place and holds a 1/2-game lead over Mount Vernon (9-3, 9-3).

After falling behind by two runs in the top of the first inning, Lake Stevens stormed back on three consecutive hits. Whitney Cochran, who hit a triple to score Gina Carbonatto, scored the tying run off a Lacie Nelson suicide bunt. Nelson gave Lake Stevens a 3-2 lead when Frietag doubled into right-center field to score Nelson.

“That first inning really did us in,” Williams said. “Both teams hit the ball well. And then, from there on, both defenses took over.”

Cochran capped off three consecutive hits in the second inning with a single to center field, which scored Carbonatto to give Lake Stevens a 4-2 lead.
