LAKE STEVENS — Mick Majors (119 pounds), Ryan Rodorigo (125 pounds), Jose Cervantes (135 pounds) and Justin Grow (189 pounds) earned pins to help Lake Stevens complete a perfect 8-0 Wesco North dual meet season with a 55-15 win over Oak Harbor. The Vikings won their 20th league championship in the past 21 seasons, finishing ahead of second-place Everett and Marysville-Pilchuck (6-2).
On Lake Stevens senior night, two-time individual state champion Josh Heinzer, a senior, did not compete for the Vikings, and neither did other Lake Stevens standouts Steven Walkley and Josh Villani. Heinzer (112 pounds) and Walkley (135 pounds) are both ranked No. 1 in Class 4A in their respective weight divisions, according to WashingtonWrestlingReport.com; Villani (152 pounds) is ranked No. 2 in 4A. All three of them were at the gym but not in wrestling attire.
Lake Stevens head coach Brent Barnes declined to answer why Heinzer, Walkley and Villani did not wrestle. Heinzer will return to competition next week, Barnes said, in time for the 4A District 1 tournament, the first step in the road to the state meet. But it remains to be seen if Villani and Walkley will be back for districts, said Barnes.
