Lake Stevens wins

OAK HARBOR – The Lake Stevens girls basketball team defeated Oak Harbor 56-46 Friday night and clinched a district playoff berth with the victory.

The Wildcats (2-9 in league, 3-12 overall) took an early 8-2 lead in the Wesco North contest but Lake Stevens (10-3, 11-6) fought back to hold a one-point lead at the half.

After the intermission, the Vikings continued to build on their lead behind the playmaking of Mary Ochiltree and Kristina Schumacher. Ochiltree sank two key 3-pointers in the third quarter and Schumacher scored a team-high 15 points and was seven of eight from the free-throw line in the second half.

Heidi McNeill scored 19 of the Wildcats’ 26 second-half points. The University of Washington- bound McNeill ended the night with a game-high 24 points.

Monroe 62, Cascade 38: Sophomore dynamo Sarah Morton powered Monroe to the Wesco North victory with a performance that included seven assists and five steals in addition to her team-high 15 points.

Mountlake Terrace 59, Kamiak 56: Senior guard Ashley Grover scored 17 points to lead Mountlake Terrace to the Wesco South victory. Terrace was able to take control of the game with a commanding third quarter in which it nearly doubled Kamiak’s scoring output (20-11).

Ashley Fenimore added eight assists and six steals, Shannon Wood had seven points nine rebounds and Latrina Woods contributed 12 points for the Mavericks. Allison Burns led the Thunderbirds with eight points.

Edmonds-Woodway 48, Mariner 35: After averaging 32 turnovers during its past four games, E-W cut that number down to just 11 and came away with the Wesco South win. Junior point guard Jessica Takara led a true team effort (every Edmonds player received minutes) with 24 points.

Archbishop Murphy 64, Lakewood 59: Lakewood’s Laurie Bader scored 23 points and set a school record with seven 3-point baskets, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Archbishop Murphy in the Cascade Conference game. Lisa Coate led the Wildcats with 21 points while Lauren Lasswell and Ashley Reinig tallied 16 and 15, respectively. Courtney Seiber and Ally Stewart added 12 points apiece for the Cougars. Bader’s seven trey’s broke the previous school record of six, set by Allie Shepard in 1997.

Cedarcrest 56, South Whidbey 47: Cedarcrest scored 29 points to overcome the five 3-point baskets made by South Whidbey in a wild fourth quarter. The balanced Cedarcrest scoring was led by Betsy Westerman and Karen Lawton with 11 each in the Cascade Conference game. Westerman added seven rebounds and four steals and Kristen McKinley had 13 rebounds, eight points and four assists.

Friday Harbor 50, Coupeville 47: Guard Sarah Anderson dropped a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left to give Friday Harbor the Northwest A/B conference win. Coupeville’s Lexie Black led all scorers with 22 points, added 11 rebounds for the double-double and had four blocked shots.
