Lakewood advances to Class 2A state volleyball tournament

BELLINGHAM — Lakewood punched its ticket to the state volleyball tournament for the first time in more than 20 years in the winner-to-state game of the 2A District 1 volleball tournament Saturday, defeating Bellingham in four sets.

“It was awesome,” Lakewood head coach Tasha Kryger said about the win. “Our school hasn’t gone to state for over 20 years. We’ve been working for so long to get here.”

Kryger said that her squad had been practicing all week in preparation for the game against Bellingham.

“We played Bellingham at the Mount Baker tournament, so we knew what they had. … I know that they were coming to compete and it wasn’t going to be easy. We worked on places to attack on their defense and how to make their offense struggle a bit,” Kryger said.

Erin White, who Kryger calls her “quarterback,” had 46 assists in Saturday’s matches against Bellingham and Burlington-Edison.

“She was fantastic,” Kryger said. “She ran the offense and encourages the team. She’s a leader. She helped us finds ways to win.”

Lakewood lost in straight sets to Burlington-Edison in a seeding match. Lakewood will have the fourth seed in the state tournament.

“These girls came together this year and are really turning heads,” Kryger said. “They are the real deal.”
