YAKIMA — In a tight contest in which neither team could create separation, ninth-seeded Lakewood missed a pair of shots in the waning seconds and lost to Northwest Conference foe and No. 8-seed Sehome 42-40 in a 2A state tournament loser-out game late Wednesday night.
Blake Conyers made a 3-pointer with 14 seconds to go to pull Lakewood to within one at 41-40. The Cougars then fouled Gavin Ortega, who made his first free throw and missed the second to give Lakewood a chance to win or tie. But two 3-points attempts wouldn’t fall and the Cougars’ season came to an end.
Conyers was a force all night for Lakewood. The standout senior scored a team-high 25 points, including five 3-pointers, and added five rebounds. Justice Taylor added seven points on an off night offensively, and Andrew Molloy added six for Lakewood (15-7).
Mathew Storms scored 14 points and Grey Garrison added 13 for Sehome (16-7), which advanced to face No. 2 Lynden in the state quarterfinals on Thursday.
