Lakewood breaks tie with G. Falls

LAKEWOOD — In an arduous back-and-forth game, Anna Work was able to move the ball up the left wing in the 28th minute, crossing it into position for Hayley Bustad to score the game’s only goal as Lakewood topped Granite Falls 1-0 Tuesday in a Cascade Conference girls soccer game.

Coming into the game both teams were dead even in the middle of the Cascade Conference, each with 5-5 division records. Lakewood coach Jeremiah Wolgemuth said his players knew shutting down the Tigers’ hot-footed forward Katy Cashman would be necessary to get the victory and losing sweeper Jeneca Hoidel to injury didn’t make the task seem any easier. Courtney Prosser was able to fill in at sweeper and the Cougars were able to shut down Cashman and the Tiger offense, giving goalkeeper Emily steinborn her third shutout of the year.
