Chris Walster knew the Lakewood girls golf team would be faced with some challenges this spring in its first season in the Northwest Conference, but the Cougars coach is pleased with how the squad has responded to those challenges.
“We’re doing a little bit better than expected,” Walster said. “In this league, girls golf is really good. We talked about wanting to finish in the top half of the league. Right now, we’re in fifth place out of 13 teams, so we’re accomplishing that goal.”
Walster said he thinks his top two players — junior Bailey Dixon and senior Brooke Forsell — have a chance to advance to the 2A state meet. Forsell was an alternate to state last spring.
“Bailey has a typical golfer’s build — she’s 5-foot-10, long arms, long legs,” Walster said. “She can hit it with some of the longer hitters in our league. Brooke got off to a slow start this year, but she’s been picking it up lately. She doesn’t hit the ball a long way, but she keeps it in the middle (of fairways), and her short game is good.”
