Cold, wet weather didn’t stop four Lakewood High runners from making history last weekend.
Senior Tyler Rapp, juniors Scott Skiles and Kyle Hayton, and sophomore Terrence Ordonez combined to set a school record Saturday in the boys distance medley relay during the prestigious Pasco Invitational at Edgar Brown Stadium.
Rapp, who ran the opening 1,200-meter leg, Hayton (400), Ordonez (800) and Skiles (1,600) completed the event in 10 minutes, 52.73 seconds. The Class 2A Cougars placed fourth in a strong field led by Mead (first, 10:44.66), Mount Spokane (second, 10:47.39), both 4A teams, and Lake City of Idaho (10:49.05). Lakewood’s time was about four seconds faster than its best previous distance relay effort.
Before the race, Lakewood co-head coach Jeff Sowards said he told his runners, “This is your one opportunity to run against some of the better schools in the Northwest.”
The Cougars rose to the occasion. All four runners either set personal records or were extremely close to doing so in their respective distances.
“They raced really well. They got their nose right into it,” Sowards said.
Even though their noses were quite cold.
Said Sowards, “The (chilly and wet) conditions did hamper some times for a lot of people. … Those are the things you don’t expect to get in Pasco this time of year.”
Lakewood senior George Schweigert also performed well. He finished tenth with a personal-record discus throw of 150 feet, 9 inches. Snohomish senior Michael Johnson was fifth (157-6).

Fitzpatrick on fire: After missing most of last season with a broken right ankle, Jackson golfer Sean Fitzpatrick is on a roll. The junior shot an event-record 68 April 10 at the Fifth Annual Tom Dolan Memorial Golf Tournament at Everett Golf and Country Club. His 4-under par effort helped Jackson (308 strokes) tie for second with Arlington behind team champion Kamiak (297). Fitzpatrick had five birdies, including a round-capping 20-yard chip-in, and he missed just three greens. “It was the best tournament I’ve ever played in my life,” he said. Fitzpatrick, who was a state tourney alternate as a freshman, hopes to make his first state trip this season and help Jackson challenge for a team title: “It’s been a great season so far, and I just hope I can keep improving.”
Olson Memorial an emphatic success: Lynnwood senior golfer Mike Olson, featured March 21 in The Herald (“Links with the past”), raised $12,500 April 9 during the first Skip Olson Memorial Golf Scramble at Eaglemont Golf Course in Mount Vernon. Named in honor of Mike Olson’s father, who died of lung cancer nearly a year ago, the charity event benefits the American Cancer Society. “It’s probably one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life,” said Olson, who organized the event for his senior project. “I honored my dad like I wanted to and I raised a lot of money like I wanted to.” Olson thanked the 139 golfers who participated and the 17 volunteers who made the event possible.
State volleyball tourneys reassigned: The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced revised sites for the 2006 state volleyball championships (Nov. 10-11). The inaugural Class 1B tourney will be at Spokane Falls CC, 2B is at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, 1A/2A is at SunDome in Yakima, and 3A/4A is at Toyota Center in Kennewick. Originally, the tourneys were to be held at the Tacoma Dome in a new all-classification event, but facility officials turned down the prep event to host a concert.
Five Bruins commit: The following seniors, all members of the Cascade boys basketball team, found collegiate athletic opportunities, according to Bruins head coach Kevin Rohrich: Mike Matson and Marcus Guffey (Highline Community College basketball), Sean Carter (Bellevue CC basketball), Phillip Thomas (University of Puget Sound football) and Chris Hilliard (Western Washington University track and field).
More commitments/signings: Snohomish goalkeeper Grace Lee and Cascade midfielder Kelsey Lundberg will play soccer for Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego. Lee played for the Northwest Nationals club team and was an All-Wesco North first team pick this past fall. Lundberg, also an All-Wesco North first team player, was a team captain and a three-year varsity competitor. … Everett classmates Andrew Skorney (Linfield College football) and Bryce Levin (Puget Sound basketball) committed. They played together on the Seagulls state-playoff team. … Cementing an earlier verbal agreement, on Friday Monroe softball pitcher Ashly Forsberg signed a letter of intent to play for Utah Valley State.
