BELLINGHAM — When the dust settled on the first day of the 2A District 1 volleyball tournament, Lakewood High School found itself on the cusp of heading to state.
After defeating Anacortes 3-0 in the first round, the Cougars fell 3-1 to first-seed Sehome in the quarterfinals. The loss means that the Cougars face Shorecrest on Saturday with the winner going to state.
Lakewood head coach Tasha Kryger said confidence was key in the Cougars’ victory over Anacortes.
“(The) girls felt confident. I was happy with how we played because my girls felt that they could win,” Kryger said.
According to Kryger, some of that confidence was coming from Lakewood senior setter Erin White.
“Erin is our floor captain. She’s our general. She’s the coach on the court,” Kryger said. “I thought she was fantastic. All the girls came in ready to play (and) Erin just makes other players better. She makes an ordinary player extraordinary.”
Saturday’s game will be a big one for Lakewood, but Kryger is confident in her team.
“Going into tonight and going into Saturday we are just taking one match at a time, one point at a time.” Lakewood head coach Tasha Kryger said about her match against the Scots.
“I’m excited about this team. They compete very hard and have a ‘never-say-die’ attitude. We’re excited about Saturday.”
