Larry Pegram sweeps AMA Superbike doubleheader

TOPEKA, Kan. — Larry Pegram swept the AMA Pro American Superbike doubleheader at Heartland Park Topeka, leading every lap Saturday and Sunday.

In the finale Sunday, the Ducati rider finished 0.333 seconds ahead of Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden. Yamaha’s Josh Hayes was third.

“I was sweating, Tommy was all over me,” Pegram said. “I could hear him back there, I could feel him. My hats off to him, I rode as hard as I possibly could and he was there the whole race.”

Pegram is third in the series standings with 286 points with four races remaining. Mat Mladin, who didn’t race this weekend, leads with 390. Hayden is second with 307.

In the Daytona SportBike race, Martin Cardenas passed Saturday winner Danny Eslick twice on the final lap for his seventh victory of the season. Cardenas and Eslick are tied for series lead with 318 points with four races left.
