EVERETT — Dyonte Law rushed for 252 yards on just 15 carries and accounted for four Mariner touchdowns as the Marauders thumped Jackson 42-24 Friday in a Wesco 4A matinee at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Law had three touchdowns on the ground and also caught Mariner’s only completed pass of the night for a 6-yard score.
With Jackson’s defense geared to funnel the shifty Law to the center of the field, the senior running back used his speed to repeatedly beat Timberwolves defenders to the edge and showed great elusiveness in the open field.
“My offensive line and the other backs opened big holes for me,” Law said. “This win was huge for us. The rivalries with Cascade and Jackson go way back, and to beat them back-to-back is always big for us.”
The Marauders (2-1, 2-3) beat Cascade 40-14 last Friday for their first conference win of the season, and wasted no time getting back to business against Jackson (0-2, 1-3).
Law punctuated the opening drive of the game with a 36-yard jaunt around the right side for a score, and Mariner went on to take a 21-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
Jackson regained some momentum going into halftime, as Aaron Avalos and Jason Cottingham split carries getting the Timberwolves downfield. Quarterback Alex Cheesman kept the drive alive by finding Keynan Foster for a 23-yard catch on third-and-six.
Foster had 11 receptions for 115 yards in the game.
Mariner’s defense stiffened inside the red zone, holding the Timberwolves to a 29-yard field goal by Chandler Woolley at the halftime whistle that made the score 21-10.
Jackson got the ball to begin the second half, but its drive stalled in Mariner territory. The Timberwolves went for it on fourth-and-15, but Cheesman’s pass was incomplete in front of Garrett Foster.
Law took the handoff on the first play of the ensuing drive and raced 64 yards around the right side for a score to make it 28-10. Mariner put Jackson away just 25 seconds later, as Greg Whitaker stepped in front of a Cheesman pass and galloped 32 yards the other way for a touchdown.
“Any time you give up back-to-back scores, it’s huge,” Jackson coach Joel Vincent said. “The hole became deeper for us.”
Mariner coach John Ondriezek lauded his defense for taking away whatever momentum the Timberwolves built.
“Stopping them was crucial,” he said. “Greg’s a hard-nosed player on defense and he makes things happen with his aggressiveness and enthusiasm.”
Whitaker added 54 rushing yards for Mariner, which racked up 410 on the ground.
