Competitive running and dog shows seem about as different as it gets along the sports spectrum, right?
But Rici Morrill, a multi-talented senior at Sultan High School, excels at both activities. Click here to read a story from today’s Herald about Morrill, who has asthma but became the best female distance runner in Sultan High history. She will run track and cross country at Boise State University.
A couple of notes about Morrill that I didn’t include in the story:
*She has a fraternal twin sister, Stephanie Morrill, who is also involved in showing dogs. Music, not sports, is Stephanie’s passion, Rici said. Stephanie participates in marching band, show choir and jazz band, Rici said.
*When Rici Morrill competed in the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City in 2007, she found the city exciting but pretty overwhelming, compared to tiny Sultan. “There were way too many people (in New York), I thought, but it was definitely an awesome experience,” she said.
*Asked to name her favorite track event (she mainly runs the 3,200-, 1,600- and 800-meter races), Morrill said her preference changes from year to year. This season it is the 800, she said. It’s an even she said she used to dislike because the pace was “too fast” but now she is more comfortable in it. Obviously: Earlier this spring Morrill broke the school record in the 800, running it in 2 minutes, 20.10 seconds.
