Sun and baseball. What a great combination.
Several times Wednesday afternoon I had to smile and appreciate the suddenly ideal spring weather. It made covering the Cascade versus Marysville-Pilchuck Wesco North baseball game in Marysville very enjoyable. Fueled by 13 hits and a complete-game effort by left-handed pitcher Barrett Davis, Cascade routed league-leading M-P 12-2 in five innings.
M-P, ranked No. 4 in Class 4A, had been on a roll, outscoring opponents 87-17 during a nine-game win streak, including a 5-0 record last week. But Cascade (6-2 North) dealt M-P (9-1) its first division loss.
Speaking of Wesco North baseball, remember former Snohomish star Derek Jones? Well now Jones is putting on a power-hitting display for Washington State University. Check out this story about the WSU freshman outfielder by Larry Henry. Jones bashed nine home runs in the Cougars’ first 31 games this season.
Moving to Wesco South baseball … the latest Double Team reader poll is up and running. The question is: Which team will win the 2009 Western Conference South Division title? So far, the leader is Lynnwood, which has received 33 percent of the total votes. Shorewood is second (22 percent) and Jackson (16 percent) is third.
Had enough baseball? OK, let’s get to some basketball news. Four local players earned first team honors on the 2008-09 Associated Press all-state basketball teams announced Wednesday. The local first-teamers are: Snohomish’s Katie Benson (4A girls), Archbishop Murphy’s Alyssa Smith (2A girls), Sultan’s Jordan Nicholes (2A boys) and Tulalip Heritage’s Lesjar McKinney (1B boys).
