This might be a personal record for my most random collection of links in a blog post. How’s that for an intro?
A few months ago my co-worker introduced me to the work of author Michael Lewis. I had heard of his ultra-famous book, “Moneyball.” I finally read it and it was fascinating.
Then the same co-worker told me about an article Lewis recently wrote for the New York Times. Examining some of the same concepts discussed in “Moneyball,” Lewis wrote an in-depth story about Houston Rockets forward Shane Battier called “The No-Stats All-Star. It’s one of the best, most eye-opening basketball stories I’ve read. Definitely worth a look, even if you are not a big hoops fan.

It seems like I can’t go a minute without hearing about swine flu. How could it affect high school sports? Concerns about it have already wiped out athletic events in Alabama.
Here in Washington, I haven’t heard of any swine flu-related cancellations. But here is a statement from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, released late this morning:
(RENTON, Wash.) — The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has received several inquiries related to the swine influenza and its potential impact on school events.
The WIAA staff is in communication with the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and will administer necessary updates as the situation continues to develop. The WIAA is committed to the safety and health of all involved in WIAA athletics and activities and will respond appropriately regarding the scheduling of events.
Go to the WIAA Web site for links to helpful health resources.

Finally, here is a link to a story about Lynnwood track and field athlete Amanda Overdick. The senior overcame two serious knee injuries — one in each leg — and is now competing again for the Royals.
