Youngsters looking to learn about golf can take advantage of an opportunity offered by the Grass Roots Junior Golf program of Snohomish County in the coming weeks.
The program begins with an open house from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Greens at Lobo Ridge, a short nine-hole course in Snohomish that is ideally suited for novice golfers. The open house, which is free, will be followed by three- and two-day sessions throughout the summer. Each session – the first is from 4 to 6 p.m. on June 14-16 – is $65.
The Grass Roots program is coordinated by a management team that includes Mark Johnson, president of Left-Tee Golf; Todd Tibke, superintendent at Lobo Ridge and a prominent area amateur player; and John Brandvold, head pro at Snohomish Golf Course. The program provides youngsters with instruction in a small-group setting.
The sessions, Brandvold said, are available to “boys and girls of all skill levels and ages. Our instructional components not only focus on golf, but also life skills and character building.”
All juniors who attend the open house and are accompanied by an adult will receive a free green fee for Lobo Ridge for use that day.
For information about the Grass Roots program, contact Lobo Ridge at 360-568-1638 or Tibke at 425-238-2421.
Local golfers win state title: Mukilteo’s Mike Seek, a member of Everett Golf and Country Club, and Seattle’s Jeff Strickland, who belongs to Mill Creek Country Club, teamed to win the 48th annual Washington State Men’s Best-Ball Amateur Championship last week at Eaglemont Golf Course in Mount Vernon.
With the event shortened to one round because of rain, Seek and Strickland posted a 65 – eight birdies and a bogey – for a five-stroke margin over the team of Jamie Kirkebo and Tres Kirkebo, both from Tacoma, and Spokane’s David Fern and Wenatchee’s Rob Matson. Fern and Matson were the defending champions.
Alex Stamey of Mill Creek and Pat Baraya of Kirkland tied for fourth at 71.
