Sidney Trinidad, a sophomore at Arlington High School, placed second in her age division in the speed competition last week at the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Youth Championships in Noumea, New Caledonia.
Trinidad, competing in the Female Youth B division, posted a time of 10.07 seconds on the 15-meter climbing wall in the finals. Ekaterina Barashchuk of Russia won the event in a time of 9.52.
Trinidad, who also placed 10th in the sports category, was part of a 40-member U.S. climbing team that participated in 12 age/gender categories. She was one of just three U.S. athletes who earned spots on the podium.
“Sidney was ecstatic to break through and place so well,” her father, Chris Trinidad, said in an e-mail.
