Local H.S. girls soccer players help win U-18 tournament

Several players from local high schools were part of the Greater Seattle Surf girls 2000 A soccer squad that claimed the championship of the Girls U-18 Super Black Division at the 2017 San Diego Surf Cup held July 28-Aug. 7.

The Greater Seattle Surf rolled through the tournament without allowing a goal. The team was 3-0 in pool play, outscoring its opponents 7-0. The Surf defeated the FC Salmon Creek Nemesis from Vancouver, Washington, 1-0 in the semifinals, then topped Rebels SC Elite out of Chula Vista, California, 1-0 in the championship game.

Players on the team who attend Snohomish County high schools included Edmonds-Woodway’s Gabby Chappell, Stanwood’s Espy Soriano Sanchez, Glacier Peak’s Kiah Dayton and Kimber Thomas, Mountlake Terrace’s Isa Kembel, Shorewood’s Anna Whitaker, Jackson’s Keile Hansen and Jadyn Edwards, Lynnwood’s Madison Hinkel and Marysville Getchell’s Hayli Huhta.

Locals place at Washington Juinor Golf Association tournament

Several locals placed at the Washington Junior Golf Association State Tournament held Aug. 1-3 in Richland and Sunnyside.

Two locals finished as runners-up in their divisions. Mukilteo’s Alvin Kwak placed second in the boys 16-18 division, shooting a three-round score of 9-under par at Meadow Springs Country Club, Black Rock Creek Golf Course and Columbia Point Golf Club. Stanwood’s Conrad Chisman finished in a tie for second in the boys 8-11 division with a score of 6-over.

Other locals who placed included Mukilteo’s Daniel Kim, who was third in the boys 12-13 division at 2-under; Arlington’s Malia Schroeder, who tied for third in the girls 12-13 division at 14-over; Tulalip’s Josef Koznek, who finished sixth in the boys 14-15 division at 6-over; Snohomish’s Vreni Todd, who finished seventh in the girls 16-18 division at 14-over; and Everett’s Austin Duffy, who tied for 11th in the boys 14-15 division at 9-over.
