Local pair positioned for title try in 4A boys golf state tournament

KENNEWICK — Woodinville’s Jarrett Foote and Bellarmine Prep’s James Feutz shot 3-under-par rounds of 69 to take the lead after the first round of the 4A boys golf state tournament Tuesday at Canyon Lakes Golf Club in Kennewick.

Of the local players making the cut (top 40 and ties) for today’s second round, Kamiak’s Mark Strickland (tied for eighth with a 73) and Jackson’s Barrett McGinnis (tied for 10th with a 74) perhaps have the best shot at contending for the individual crown.

“(Tuesday) I actually hit the ball really well. I hit like 14 or 15 greens, I just really lipped a lot of putts,” Kamiak’s Strickland said. “So I’m looking for the same ball striking as today but putting a little bit better.”

“(Today) I’m looking to shoot somewhere in the 60s definitely to win … I just need to go out there and play my best.”

Meanwhile, Jackson has a shot at the team championship after four Timberwolves made the cut. On the other hand, Kamiak which finished second behind Jackson in the district competition, saw their team chances come to an end.

“(Overall) I’m disappointed because you have to get at least two individuals advancing to tomorrow’s portion to contend as a team and we had like three guys just outside of (the top 40),” Kamiak head coach Jeff Tobin said. “We just didn’t get it done.”

“I think that realistically for Mark to have a shot to win he’s going to have to shoot a 68 or 69 to counteract what (the leaders) did today (Tuesday),” Tobin said. “And he’s certainly capable of that, it’s just when the pressure is on it gets a bit tougher. But Mark is the district medalist … so he has been good under pressure so far this year.”
