VICTORIA, B.C. — After winning its first match on Saturday’s opening day, Team USA lost three straight contests at the 2013 World Men’s Curling Championships.
The Americans, led by skip Brady Clark of Lynnwood, dropped a disappointing 7-6 decision to Japan on Sunday, and later in the day fell to a strong Switzerland team, 8-4. The Americans returned to the ice Monday morning, losing to Sweden 7-6.
The U.S. was scheduled to face tournament favorite Canada on Monday night.
After two-plus days of competition, Team USA was tied for 10th among the tournament’s 12 teams with a 1-3 record.
The American team includes Sean Beighton, Philip Tilker and Darren Lehto, all of Seattle, and alternate Greg Persinger of Anchorage. Beighton grew up in Edmonds and graduated from Kamiak High School in 2007.
Gymnastics
Celinda Sewell of Leading Edge Gymnastics in Everett won the Level 8 Senior A all-around title at the Washington Optional State Championships on March 22-24 in Redmond.
Sewell finished with an all-around score of 37.425 and won state titles on the vault (9.45) and the bars (9.50).
Sewell, along with teammate Jennifer Powers, who finished second in the Junior C all-around competition (37.675), were named to the Washington State Regional Level 8 Team that will compete later this month against gymnasts from Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana and Oregon. They earned their spots by posting two of the top eight scores among all Level 8 competitors.
Other Leading Edge gymnasts who claimed state championships included Ashley Albrecht (Level 9, Junior B, vault), Jillian Ohlemeier (Level 9, Senior A, beam), Lilly Kaiser-Schmidt (Level 9, Senior B, beam and floor), Powers (Level 8, Junior C, bars), Kelsey Bassett (Level 8, Junior C, beam), Taylor Eastwood (Level 8, Junior D, bars) and Jessie Gorman (Level 7, Senior A, floor).
