Dave Morehouse, who has coached the Shorecrest volleyball team for the past 30 years, is retiring at the end of this season.
Morehouse guided the Scots to six first-place Wesco finishes, with unbeaten records in 1999 and 2006. During his tenure Shorecrest qualified for state tournament play 10 times, placing sixth in 1994, fourth in 2004 and 2007 and third in 2006.
“I had debated (retiring) the last five years. I had some work issues interfering a little bit and a health issue here or there, although I feel those are behind me,” Morehouse said. “I’ll be 60 years old before the start of the next season, and I felt it was the right time to let someone younger take over and give the program a shot of energy to move forward.”
In Morehouse’s final campaign, the Scots (3-6 Wesco 3A) have been led by the play of middle blocker Shelby Gresch, outside hitter Audrey Dietz and libero Emily Tan.
“We’ve got some kids that haven’t played much,” Morehouse said.
“But we’ve made good progress. There are some good athletes in the program, no doubt about it. These players have good attitudes and are ready to work hard every day regardless of whether they won or lost the night before.”
