Looking back at the Seahawks’ 2012 draft, and a few Friday links

In today’s Herald we look at the 2012 draft class, which was much maligned at the time, but is a now a big reason why Seattle is in good position to get back to the Super Bowl.

It’s fair to suggest that this might have become the best draft class of the Pete Carroll/John Schneider regime, though as Carroll says, it will take more time to really rate this class. Even now, however, finding a franchise quarterback, an All-Pro middle linebacker and several other quality starters is a pretty darn good draft. If Bruce Irvin, who took a big step this season, continues his growth next year, the class will look that much better. The class that would have the best argument for best of the PCJS era would be their first draft, which landed Russell Okung and Earl Thomas in the first round, Golden Tate and Walter Thurmond with the next two picks, and a Pro Bowl safety in round five in the form of Kam Chancellor.

If you want to look at all of Seattle’s draft history, you can do so here.

Also in today’s paper, from our friends at the News Tribune, a story on Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart, who is from Lacey, Washington, who is enjoying his best season in years.

From TheMMQB.com, a look at the matchup and how Carolina could compete with the Seahawks.

Seahawks.com looks at the talented linebackers on both teams who could play a big role in Saturday’s game.

Speaking of linebackers, CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco says Bobby Wagner might actually be better than Luke Kuechly, last year’s defensive player of the year.

Also at Seahawks.com, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready raised a 12th man flag on the Space Needle this morning. Video evidence is necessary because, thanks to the thick fog in Seattle this morning, you wouldn’t have been able to see the flag if you were a block away.

Grantland.com has a good breakdown of Saturday’s games, looking at what Carolina has done well against the Seahawks to keep recent meetings close.

From the Sporting News, a recap of how Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman briefly lost his Super Bowl ring, which was found by one of Earl Thomas’ agents.
