MOUNT VERNON – Karla Johnson scored eight points in the final 63 seconds to help lead Meridian to a 45-39 victory over Granite Falls Tuesday in a loser-out Northwest 2A tournament girls baskeball game at Mount Vernon High School.
Meridian plays Lynden Christian at 1 p.m. Saturday in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at Mount Vernon High School.
Johnson led all scorers with 15 points and teammate Bree Brandt added 11 for Meridian (9-13).
After being outscored 14-10 in the first quarter, Meridian used a 17-7 second-quarter run to take a 24-21 halftime lead. Brandt led Meridian by scoring seven points during the team’s second-quarter run.
Granite Falls (12-12) pulled to within three points in the second half, but couldn’t get any closer than that.
Casey Jensen scored 10 of her 14 points in first quarter and teammate Nichole Megard scored nine points for Granite Falls.
