LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville cornerback Anthony Conner is undergoing additional tests after breaking his neck in a game against Rutgers, Louisville coach Charlie Strong said Saturday.
The injury occurred on the first play of the second quarter Friday night when Conner’s head hit the knee of Rutgers receiver Mohamed Sanu.
Conner wasn’t paralyzed. Strong said Saturday that the senior was conscious with feeling in his extremities.
Strong issued a statement Saturday morning that Conner is still being evaluated and that the team’s medical staff is updating him as they get new information on Conner’s condition.
“We appreciate all the thoughts and prayers for Anthony and his family during this difficult time,” Strong said.
Conner came in low to tackle Sanu, and the cornerback flipped the Rutgers receiver. But Conner’s helmet banged off Sanu’s right knee, and he went down on the field. Trainers worked on him for several minutes, strapping him to a backboard. He did move his feet and a hand as he was carted off to an ambulance.
Before he was taken away, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights all came onto the field and knelt, watching as trainers worked on Conner. Just more than a year ago, many of these players watched as teammate Eric LeGrand was carted off the field after the defensive lineman fractured two vertebrae tackling an Army kick returner.
“I would also like to thank the Rutgers football team and head coach Greg Schiano for their display of class and compassion for Anthony during the game last night,” Strong said.
