Lynden beats Prosser in 2OT

TACOMA — Prosser’s Kirby Moore set the national high school record for touchdown catches in a single season, but it was Lynden celebrating the Washington Class 2A state title with a stunning 35-34 double overtime win on Saturday.

Lynden rallied with two touchdowns in the final 1:31 of regulation to force overtime, then was able to celebrate when a two-point conversion pass by Prosser’s Jordan Durbin in the second overtime fell to the turf.

David Gaylord scored on a 1-yard run in the second overtime and Joel Brown’s extra point gave Lynden a 35-28 lead. Moments later, Durbin hit Moore on a 10-yard touchdown pass to pull the Mustangs within one.

It was Moore’s 34th touchdown catch this season, breaking the previous national record held by Shayne Boyd of New Deal, Texas, in 1987. Moore finished with 14 catches for 267 yards and three touchdowns, setting state championship game records for catches and yards in any classifications. He’s verbally committed to join his brother Kellen at Boise State next year.

After exchanging time outs, Prosser went for the 2-point conversion, but Durbin was pressured as he rolled out to his right. His desperation pass into the end zone was knocked down and the Lions erupted in celebration at the middle of the field.

Lynden (12-2) quarterback Jordan Hastings completed 19 of 30 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns. His 18-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Soto with 1:31 left pulled Lynden within 21-13. The Lions then perfectly executed an onside kick and then needed only 38 seconds to pull even at 21-all. Hastings found Jordan Weeks for 41 yards to the Prosser 4 and Gaylord plowed in on the next play. Hastings then hit Gaylord for the two-point conversion to draw even.

Prosser (13-1) had one last chance in regulation, but Durbin — who finished 24 of 35 for 375 yards and four TDs — was intercepted at the goal line on the final play of regulation. Durbin finished the season with 64 touchdown passes and seven interceptions.

Both teams exchanged touchdowns in the first overtime. Prosser needed a 23-yard TD pass from Durbin to Matt Young on fourth-and-9, while Hastings hit Blair Bomber on a 5-yard touchdown pass.

Gaylord finished with 85 yards rushing on 19 carries for the Lions, and Hastings added 82 yards on the ground.

It’s Lynden’s second Class 2A title in the last three years.
