Lynnwood’s Kwong-Borsan finish sixth at state tennis

RICHLAND — Lynnwood’s Monica Kwong and Cristina Borsan struggled on the second day of the 4A State Tennis Championships but still came away with sixth place and a school record.

The duo only managed to pick up two games against eventual state doubles champions Fiona Cerf and Alexia Fife of Garfield in a 6-2, 6-0 semifinal loss. With a championship no longer on the table, Kwong and Borsan gave Camas’ Esther Kwon and Jen Lewis a match, but lost 6-4, 6-3 in the third-place match.

“The Garfield duo was extremely tough. They did not drop a set the entire tournament. We struggled to get back on track after that match. But the girls had a great run and their 6th place finish is the best in school history,” said Lynnwood head coach Rob McMains by email.

The Royals finished sixth overall in the tournament according to WIAA.com.

Lake Stevens’ Erin Huffman and Megan Huffman won their consolation match to finish one spot ahead of the Lynnwood team in fifth. In singles, Kamiak’s Sally Park defeated Megan Hagerty of Graham Kapowsin for fourth place and Edmonds-Woodway’s Myint-Zu Kyaw beat Kailyn Skjonsby of South Kitsap for fifth.
