M-P boys can’t quite catch up to Sehome

BELLINGHAM – The Marysville-Pilchuck boys basketball team kept trying to claw back. But in the end, the Tomahawks couldn’t quite catch the Sehome Mariners.

The Tomahawks opened their season with a 63-50 loss to Sehome Tuesday night in a non-league contest.

Behind 35-27 at halftime, Marysville-Pilchuck closed within two points in the third quarter before Sehome increased the lead back to nine. Then in the fourth quarter, Marysville-Pilchuck came within four before the Mariners pulled away.

“It was a good first game,” Marysville-Pilchuck coach Mike Lowery said. “It was definitely a game of runs. They would get up and we would come back and then they’d get another run. Unfortunately they got the last run there at the end of the game.”

Lowery said the biggest difference in the game was rebounding.

“I think our rebounding is suspect at best right now,” Lowery said. “We gave them too many second and third chances at hoops, that was our downfall. But it’s still early and they have time to get their feet underneath them.”

Jared Stohl led the Tomahawks, making four 3-point goals and scoring 15 points.
