M-P fends off Snohomish, 28-25 in Wesco North meet

MARYSVILLE – In a contest decided by the last match of the night, Marysville-Pilchuck lost the bout but won 28-25 over Wesco North rival Snohomish Thursday.

M-P held a six-point lead before the final bout, the 275-pound match pitting the Tomahawks’ Denis Moynihan against Matt Stach. A Snohomish pin or M-P default would tie the score and give the Panthers the victory based on tiebreaker criteria.

Moynihan weighed in at 202 but wrestled as a heavyweight to avoid giving Snohomish a forfeit. He held his own against his heavier opponent and lost the bout by only one point to seal M-P’s victory.

“It was a great match,” said M-P assistant wrestling coach John Hodgkins. “It’s a big win when we beat Snohomish. They wrestle well and don’t make mistakes.”

M-P fell behind early, but rallied in the middle bouts. Juan Escalante (135 pounds) scored an 18-8 major decision against Brian Hise followed by victories in the 140-, 145- and 152-pound matches.
