Lucky for Marysville-Pilchuck and coach Mike Lowery, Jared Stohl isn’t your average freshman. The right-handed Stohl made a 12-foot left-handed floater as the buzzer sounded to give the Tommies a 47-46 victory against the Monroe Bearcats Friday night in a key Western Conference North Division thriller.
Lowery said he never doubted Stohl, who scored six of his team-high 14 points in the final quarter, including four-for-four at the free-throw line. “If you know Jared, you know he’s the kind of kid that has played his whole life. He loves taking those shots.”
The victory ups M-P’s record to 5-6 in league, 5-10 overall. Monroe fell to 4-7, 6-8.
“I’m feel really, really excited for our kids,” Lowery said, “but at the same time I feel really bad for Monroe.”
The teams entered the game tied for fifth place in the league. The top four teams automatically qualify for the district tournament. The fifth-place team gets a play-in opportunity.
Junior Tyler Marley scored eight points to lead Monroe.
