ARLINGTON – Two teams headed in vastly different directions collided Friday night at Larson Stadium.
Marysville-Pilchuck, which had won its previous two games by a combined 89-7 margin, continued its late-season surge by blasting a struggling, injury-riddled Arlington team 29-0 in a Western Conference North contest.
Once again, fullback Ken Kam spearheaded the Tomahawks offense, carrying 17 times for 95 yards and three touchdowns. Kam now has 16 rushing TDs this season, including 13 in the last three weeks.
Kam reached the end zone twice in the first half as the Tomahawks (4-3 in league, 4-4 overall) built a 22-0 lead. His first TD came on a 1-yard dive that capped M-P’s 11-play, 97-yard drive and opened the scoring with five minutes, 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Junior Todd Stillwell made the point-after-touchdown kick to give Marysville-Pilchuck a 7-0 lead.
Kam also scored on short runs in the second and third quarters. He made an impact on defense as well, contributing a 25-yard pass interception return from his linebacker spot late in the second quarter.
Quarterback Damino Stewart successfully guided M-P’s suddenly explosive offense, which totaled 368 yards, including 319 on the ground. When Stewart wasn’t handing off to Kam and running backs Apollo Lewis (10 carries for 92 yards) and Nick Daily (6-55), he inflicted considerable damage on his own.
Stewart, a 5-foot-11 senior, rushed seven times for 55 yards and engineered the game’s most exciting play. With 1:20 remaining in the second quarter, Stewart dropped back, gazed downfield and completed a precise pass to Lewis, who raced for a 49-yard TD. M-P’s two-point pass attempt failed, leaving it with a commanding 22-0 advantage.
With junior quarterback Kenny Gunter sidelined by injury, Arlington (2-4, 2-6) turned to a sophomore QB rotation of Brett Smith and Darren Edwards.
At halftime, Arlington, losers in four of its last five games, barely had more offensive yards (65) than it had given up in penalties (44). Senior running back Brenton Bodewig finished with 47 yards on nine carries and sophomore back Taylor Brown tallied 43 yards on eight attempts.
Stillwell nailed a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter for Marysville-Pilchuck, which travels to Juanita for a non-conference game next Friday. Arlington plays at Snohomish.
