M-P wins third straight North crown

SNOHOMISH – The Marysville-Pilchuck boys track team rolled up 160 points Friday to capture its third consecutive Western Conference North Division title at Snohomish High School.

“Winning this for the third time is just great,” M-P coach Randy Davis said. “We aren’t as disciplined as we were last year and the kids knew if they wanted this one they would have to step up.”

The Tomahawks were led by Dan Costello’s two victories in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the 1,600 relay.

M-P held off second-place Snohomish, which finished with 129 points and posted five first-place finishes.

“That was an amazing victory in the 1,600 (relay),” Davis said. “I didn’t think he (Costello) was going to catch the leader. But once Dan believes he’s going to get him, usually good things happen.”

Costello, who ran the fourth leg in the 1,600 relay, caught the leader on the final stretch, leading M-P to victory with a time of 3 minutes, 27.52 seconds, a half-second faster than Snohomish.

“We wanted to just come out and perform like we know we could,” Costello said. “We knew that we’d be tested, but we take each meet one at a time.”

Josh McKnight won the 400 and Nick Mundell captured the 110 hurdles to lead Snohomish to second place.

“Our goal was to finish in the top three and we did that,” said Snohomish coach Tuck Gionet, whose Panthers failed to do so in 2003. “I can’t even remember what we did last year. I think it was fifth, our lowest since I’ve been coach. I am so proud of these guys, they did an awesome job.”
