Blair to coach all-stars: Karen Blair, who guided Meadowdale to the Class 3A girls basketball state championship, and Bill Resler, who led Roosevelt to the 4A title, will co-coach the 3A/4A West team in the 2004 Girls Basketball All-State Games to be played June 19 at Mead High School in Spokane. The 3A/4A East-West game will be the fourth of the day, following East-West games in the B, 1A and 2A classifications. Rosters are expected to be announced in late April.
Mountlake Terrace fills openings: Mountlake Terrace has hired alum Tony Umayam to coach football and Edmonds-Woodway grad Deidra Ducheane to coach girls basketball.
A 1990 Terrace graduate, Umayam competed in football and track for the Hawks before playing football for Willamette University in Salem, Ore. A former assistant football coach at Terrace and Jackson, Umayam is currently an assistant at Mercer Island.
Ducheane played basketball for E-W before moving onto Chaffey Community College in Cucamunga, Calif., where a knee injury ended her college hoop career. She is currently the Hawks’ junior-varsity coach.
Nickelson chooses Eastern: Lake Stevens runner Amber Nickelson has accepted a scholarship offer to run cross country and track at Eastern Washington University. Nickelson won the Class 4A individual state cross country championship as a junior in 2002.
Terrace first: Briana Knight became the first Mountlake Terrace softball player to accept an NCAA Division I softball scholarship when she recently signed a letter-of-intent to play at East Tennessee State. Knight, who has a 3.9 grade-point average, is a two-time all-league selection at second base.
Shorewood coach resigns: Brandon Glasser has resigned as the girls basketball coach at Shorewood after just one season. Glasser said his resignation was “due to a lack of support from the majority of players and parents in the program.” The team will have its fifth coach in seven years when practices begin in November.
