M-P’s Johnson to coach All-State volleyball team

Marysville-Pilchuck High School coach Shelly Johnson and two of her players will be part of the Class 4A East squad for the annual Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association’s East-West All-State series to be held in July.

Matches are scheduled for July 7-8 at Fife High School, July 9 at Davis High School in Yakima and July 10 at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane.

M-P’s Micaela Parker and Nikole Thompson will be joined on the East team by Tiana Roma of Edmonds-Woodway and Rachel Crossen of Everett.

Melissa Cave and Amy Jones of Darrington will be on the 1A/B West team. Shoreline Christian’s Cristina Nelson is an alternate.

Molly Hunsinger of Lynnwood and Katy McGillen and Brianna Hussey of South Whidbey will be on the 3A East team.

Blair to coach all-stars: Karen Blair, who guided Meadowdale to the Class 3A girls basketball state championship, and Bill Resler, who led Roosevelt to the 4A title, will co-coach the 3A/4A West team in the 2004 Girls Basketball All-State Games to be played June 19 at Mead High School in Spokane. The 3A/4A East-West game will be the fourth of the day, following East-West games in the B, 1A and 2A classifications. Rosters are expected to be announced in late April.

Mountlake Terrace fills openings: Mountlake Terrace has hired alum Tony Umayam to coach football and Edmonds-Woodway grad Deidra Ducheane to coach girls basketball.

A 1990 Terrace graduate, Umayam competed in football and track for the Hawks before playing football for Willamette University in Salem, Ore. A former assistant football coach at Terrace and Jackson, Umayam is currently an assistant at Mercer Island.

Ducheane played basketball for E-W before moving onto Chaffey Community College in Cucamunga, Calif., where a knee injury ended her college hoop career. She is currently the Hawks’ junior-varsity coach.

Nickelson chooses Eastern: Lake Stevens runner Amber Nickelson has accepted a scholarship offer to run cross country and track at Eastern Washington University. Nickelson won the Class 4A individual state cross country championship as a junior in 2002.

Terrace first: Briana Knight became the first Mountlake Terrace softball player to accept an NCAA Division I softball scholarship when she recently signed a letter-of-intent to play at East Tennessee State. Knight, who has a 3.9 grade-point average, is a two-time all-league selection at second base.

Shorewood coach resigns: Brandon Glasser has resigned as the girls basketball coach at Shorewood after just one season. Glasser said his resignation was “due to a lack of support from the majority of players and parents in the program.” The team will have its fifth coach in seven years when practices begin in November.
