M-P’s season ends with second straight OT loss

KENT – For the second time in as many weeks, the Marysville-Pilchuck football team didn’t have much luck in overtime.

This time it cost the Tomahawks a state playoff berth.

Tahoma scored on its second play in overtime, and then intercepted Marysville-Pilchuck on its possession to win the state play-in game 21-14 at Kent-Meridian High School.

The Tomahawks, who lost their season finale to Oak Harbor in double overtime last Friday, had to fight just to get to the extra frame against Tahoma. The Bears threatened to score three times in the fourth quarter only to have the Tomahawks intercept two passes inside their own 30-yard line, and recover a fumble on another drive.

In overtime, Tahoma’s Chase Chappelle hit Kyle Laukala on a 20-yard touchdown pass on its second play to put the pressure on Marysville-Pilchuck.

The Tomahawks responded with a 20-yard touchdown run by Marquise Moses on their second play of the overtime. But the run was called back for holding, and the Bears picked off the next pass, ending the game and M-P’s season.

Justin Petry led the Tomahawks on the ground, rushing for 124 yards on 14 carries and scoring two touchdowns. Taylor Betz added 65 yards on 19 carries, while Moses was held to 29 yards on 13 carries.

Tahoma did most of its damage through the air. Laukala finished with 134 yards receiving, and Daniel Ulrich caught three balls for 40 yards, two for touchdowns.
