EVERETT – Everett starting pitcher Cory Mattson finally gave up a run, and it was a heartbreaker.
In the top of the seventh inning, Mountlake Terrace leadoff batter Kori Seidlitz sent Mattson’s second pitch over the fence in right field to break a scoreless deadlock and give the Hawks a 1-0 victory in the Wesco South contest.
Everett (4-1 in division, 6-1 overall) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t push a run across. The Seagulls stranded a total of 10 runners in the game.
“We had plenty of opportunities to score,” Seagulls coach Kyle Peacocke said. “We couldn’t get a clutch hit.”
Mattson, who had not allowed a run prior to Seidlitz’s homer, finished with 15 strikeouts.
