M. Vernon attacks E-W in the middle

MILL CREEK – The Mount Vernon Bulldogs moved one game closer to yet another state appearance with a solid 56-49 Class 4A Northwest District semifinal victory over the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors Saturday afternoon at Jackson High School.

“We played well and attacked them (the Warriors) today,” Mount Vernon coach Tory Swanson said.

Mount Vernon (19-3) will face the winner of the other semifinal game between Mountlake Terrace and Snohomish for the Northwest District title and a berth in the 4A state tournament at 8 p.m. Friday at Jackson H.S.

Mount Vernon jumped ahead early, attacking the middle and hitting its outside shots for a 14-7 first-quarter lead.

Junior Justin Burns led the assult connecting on a 3-point goal and a layin for five Bulldog first-quarter points.

Mount Vernon extended its lead in the second quarter by using half-court traps and double- and triple-teams in the post. Mount Vernon also benefited from poor Edmonds-Woodway (15-7) free-throw shooting to open a 26-16 halftime lead.

“We wanted to take it to Edmonds-Woodway’s big men both on offense and on defense,” Swanson said.

In the second half the Bulldogs continued pressing and trapping, building its lead to as much as 14 points.

Edmonds-Woodway’s senior post Jason Hopkins had a solid game with 12 rebounds, eight points, four assists and two blocked shots, but was saddled with foul trouble throughout the game.

Mount Vernon’s Brady Miller (18 points) and Josh Moore (14 points) took advantage of Hopkins’ foul problems by attacking the middle.

Edmonds-Woodway made it interesting late in the fourth quarter, cutting the Bulldogs lead to four points on a Huston Conti 3-pointer with one minute and two seconds remaining. But Mount Vernon broke the ensuing press, striking gold with a layin by Miller and a steal and layin by Moore.

Conti led the Warriors with 15 points, including four 3-point field goals.

Edmonds-Woodway will face the winner of the Kamiak/Stanwood game in a loser-out contest at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson H.S.
