ROSEBURG, Ore. — Sunshine, warmth and racing.
Justin Mack took the pole and the checkered flag in the Don Hein Memorial, opening the season for the American Speed Association/Northwest Sprint Car Association (ASA/NSRA) on Saturday, April 26 at Douglas County Speedway.
The weather in Roseberg was sunny and the temperature was in the mid-70s, quite a difference from the NSRA’s scheduled season opener on March 29 at Evergreen Speedway. Cold, rain — and later snow — caused the cancellation of the Doug James Memorial at the speedway in Monroe, Wash.
Mack lost the lead to RJ Frosman on the first lap, but fought his way back to pass Frosman on lap 12 en route to the victory. Jeff Montgomery finished second after coming from the back of the field after causing a yellow on lap five, Jake Mann was third, Cory Lockwood was fourth and Matt Hein rounded out the top five.
Hein set the fast time in qualifying on the three-eighths mile paved oval, but Mack sat on the pole after an eight-car invert for the 40-lap feature.
Mack and Lockwood won the heat races, and Frosman and Montgomery were the victors in the trophy dashes.
