Emergency appendectomy ends season of Harang
PITTSBURGH — Cincinnati Reds starter Aaron Harang is out for the rest of the season after an emergency appendectomy.
Harang woke Saturday morning in Pittsburgh with pain near is abdomen. He was examined later that afternoon and driven by team clubhouse manager Rick Stowe back to Cincinnati, where the surgery was performed at The Good Samaritan Hospital.
The Reds’ opening day starter, Harang was 6-14 with a 4.21 ERA in a team-leading 1621/3innings. He also had 142 strikeouts in 26 starts, but will fall short of reaching 28 starts for the first time in six seasons.
Minaya back with Mets?
NEW YORK — Mets general manager Omar Minaya is expected back next season. The New York Post reported Sunday that owner Fred Wilpon said Minaya will return in 2010 despite the failings of his $136 million team on and off the field this year.
Guillen optimistic on Peavy
CHICAGO — White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen remains optimistic that Jake Peavy will pitch again this season, even if he’s not relying on the right-hander’s return. Peavy will make his third rehab start today for Triple-A Charlotte, trying to work his way back from a strained tendon in his right ankle. The 28-year-old Peavy was traded to the White Sox on July 31, after going 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA in 13 starts with the Padres. He’s been on the DL since June 13.
Waechter set for surgery
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Royals right-hander Doug Waechter will have shoulder surgery next week, ending an injury-plagued first season with the club. Waechter pitched only 51/3 innings, allowing five runs and nine hits this year.
Rockies, Ortiz agree to deal
DENVER — Russ Ortiz and the Colorado Rockies agreed to a minor league contract Sunday. The veteran right-hander provides the Rockies with insurance after starting pitcher Aaron Cook was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained right shoulder.
