Even though he missed three games with injuries, KeiVarae Russell’s senior season at Mariner High School was special.
The 6-foot, 175-pound Russell showed why he is one of the area’s most gifted prep running backs in years. A compact runner with darting quickness and the strength to break tackles, Russell ran for 1,293 yards and 14 touchdowns with a terrific 7.3 yards-per-carry average.
All this despite missing the first game of the season with a concussion, and the final two weeks of the regular season with an ankle injury for the playoff-bound Marauders.
Those kinds of statistics were enough to put Russell on the radar of college recruiters from around the country. He ended up with scholarship offers from dozens of top schools, including every university in the Pacific-12 Conference.
Russell, though, ultimately decided to play his college football in one of the nation’s most historically prestigious programs, the University of Notre Dame.
Another highlight for Russell was his selection to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The event, held in early January, brings together top high school seniors from around the country.
