Mariner boys lose another close call

Herald staff

EVERETT – It has been both an exciting and disappointing season so far for the Mariner boys basketball team.

Seen as a preseason contender for the Western Conference South Division title, the Marauders were defeated by Jackson 58-56 on Tuesday to drop them two games behind division co-leaders Kamiak and Jackson.

Mariner (1-3 in division, 2-4 overall) has lost four games this season by a combined total of 10 points.

“This was a close back-and-forth game,” Mariner coach Dexter Griffin said. “If you were a fan, it was a fun game to watch.”

Trailing 47-40 going into the fourth quarter, the Marauders mounted a comeback led by the interior play of Scott Grondahl and Joe Coates.

Coates led Mariner with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Grondahl added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

With 12 seconds remaining in the game and Jackson holding a 58-56 lead, the Marauders came out of a time out with a play, but were unable to convert and lost the ball out of bounds.

Mariner got one final chance when Jackson lost possession on the ensuing inbounds play. Coates found Josh Olson open for a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer, but ball went in and out.

“That last 3 rolls in, then pops out,” said Griffin. “We came from a long way back, but not quite far enough. They (Jackson) have a couple of premier players and they hit some tough shots.”

Jackson was led by Chris Kellor’s game-high 17 points, including four 3-point baskets. Teammate Craig Chambers added 15 points and Nick Fantoro scored 10 points.
