Mariner gamble pays off in 37-30 victory over Lynnwood

LYNNWOOD – A coin toss and four pre-match weigh-ins gave Mariner a slight advantage that it capitalized on in a 37-30 Western Conference South Division victory over Lynnwood Thursday.

Two Mariner and two Lynnwood wrestlers all weighed in at 125 pounds before the meeting between the division’s second- and third-place teams. Mariner, however, won a coin toss that forced Lynnwood to put a wrestler for the 125-pound bout on the mat first. Mariner then had the opportunity to see its opponent first and to react accordingly.

Mariner decided to wrestle Dan Bush in that match. Bush won a major decision, swinging the momentum of the meet in Mariner’s favor.

Mariner coach Carl Wilkins said it was a gamble on who to wrestle at 125 and who to wrestle at 130, “but we gambled to win both and it worked out for us. Dan Bush really came through for us.”

Mariner received another boost when its 130-pounder, Kyle Castle, escaped from a near pin to win another major decision. That victory proved to be the final blow for Lynnwood.

“We were hoping to split those two matches, but they came away with both,” said Lynnwood coach Kevin Judkins. “You gotta give them credit, they took advantage and wrestled very well.”

“This was an important win for the kids,” said coach Wilkins. “They’ve been working extremely hard in the room. They stepped up and did what they needed to do tonight and I’m very proud of them all.”

Lynnwood’s effort was highlighted by pins by Geof LaGrandeur (119), Hai Nguyen (152), Matt Suthern (189) and Reese Cogdill (215).
