Mariner girls thrilled by soccer win

Herald staff

EVERETT – Forgive the Mariner girls soccer team for being so excited after Tuesday’s victory over Mountlake Terrace, but it had its reasons.

After a two-year drought in Western Conference action, the Marauders (1-1 in league, 1-5-1 overall) finally tasted the sweet fruits of victory in beating the Hawks 1-0.

“I told the girls ‘Don’t forget this feeling, keep it with you,’” said Mariner coach Rick Lee, who got an ice-cold bucket of water dumped on him in the post-game celebration. “It was just a great effort by all.”

Mariner and Mountlake Terrace played to a scoreless tie until Kaitlyn Aldrich scored the game-winner with 8 minutes, 37 seconds left in the game to give the Marauders the lead.

In goal, Nicole Danson and Jamie Smith combined to record the shutout. Their job was made easier by a Mariner team that kept possession of the ball for a majority of the game.

After the game, a proud coach Lee did a good job of making a big victory sound simple, “It was a good battle between two good teams and we just happened to put one in in the end.”
