Jack Kelly and Dirk Curtis of Everett Golf and Country Club claimed the 46th Washington State Men’s Best-Ball Championship last Thursday and Friday with a victory on the fourth playoff hole at Alderbrook Golf Club in Union.

Curtis, a 1989 graduate of Mariner High School, had the decisive shot on the final playoff hole, dropping a chip shot inches for the cup for a tap-in par. The opponents, first-round leaders Ed Jonson of Wing Point Golf and Country Club and Jeff Wright of Alderbrook, ended up making bogey on the hole.

It was Curtis’ debut in the prestigious event, “and it was cool to win it my first time,” he said. “It was a lot of fun.”

Kelly and Curtis had opened the tournament, which takes the better score among playing partners on every hole, with a 66 and closed with a final round 65 for a 13-under-par total of 131.

According to Kelly, the final round “was just a real dogfight. And on the last (playoff) hole, everyone was in a little bit of trouble. We won with a great par (by Curtis).”

For Kelly, it was his second straight best-ball title. He won a year ago with playing partner Matt Johnson.

“This is a good tournament,” Kelly said. “Of the best-ball tournaments, this is the one you want to win.”

As always, the state best-ball tournament had a large Snohomish County contingent on the leaderboard. Jim Strickland of Harbour Pointe Golf Course and Jeff Strickland of Mill Creek Country Club tied for fourth with a 134.

In a tie for sixth place at 140 were John Waxham and J.J. Manning, both of Mill Creek.

In a six-way tie for eighth place at 141 were Bob Burton of Harbour Pointe and Doug Lauer of EG&CC, and Alex Stamey of EG&CC and Pat Baraya of Mill Creek.

In the Senior Amateur division, defending champions Bill Gundersen of Maplewood GC and George Williams of Port Ludlow GC defeated Stan Strickland of Snohomish Golf Course and Harrison Jewell of Harbour Pointe by one stroke.
