Mariner impresses Mount Vernon coach

MOUNT VERNON – The Mariner High School wrestling team flexed its muscles Monday night in a 54-9 non-league victory over Mount Vernon.

Though the action on the mat may not have been quite as convincing as the final margin – Mariner won three of the 14 matches by two points or less – the Marauders impressed Mount Vernon coach Kurt Harvill.

“That’s a solid program with some great coaching,” said Harvill, whose team dropped to 0-2. “They are in great condition.”

For Mariner (2-0), Tyler Millerup (152 pounds), Chris Miller (275) and Austin Kintner (135) each pinned his opponent in the first round. Mariner also picked up 18 points through forfeits.

“There were some close matches,” Harvill said. “We have a young team, but I thought the teams would be more evenly matched.”
