Mike DeSimone has always had a passion for soccer.
Over the years the Everett native sampled the athletic spectrum, also playing football and baseball, but nothing beats soccer because you’re always moving, he said. Ever since his father, Vince, took him out on the pitch as a youngster, and since he competed on a team in first grade, Mike DeSimone knew soccer was his game.
Now the Mariner High School senior is set to take his passion and sought-after skills to the University of Washington. DeSimone, a forward who scored 15 goals and had eight assists last year, recently made a verbal commitment to play for the Huskies (11-6-2 overall).
DeSimone, a three-time all-Wesco first-team selection, also considered the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Saint Mary’s but he said Washington, which will make its ninth postseason appearance in 10 years on Friday, was the best fit.
“They’re just a strong team, and they’re young, too. They’re already top level. It’s going to be a challenge but it will be good for me.”
DeSimone, who plays for the Snohomish United club team, is recovering from a left quad muscle tear he suffered early this fall while playing for the Mariner football team. He has started running again and after one more week of physical therapy he hopes to again be playing the game he loves.
Said DeSimone, “I can’t wait to get back.”
