Mariner tops Oak Harbor 2-1

OAK HARBOR – The Mariner boys soccer team put all the right pieces of the puzzle together to knock off Oak Harbor 2-1 in a first-round Western Conference playoff game.

Mariner advances to play Wesco South divisional rival Jackson at 7 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium today.

Mariner (9-7-1 overall) captured its first playoff victory in more than a decade. The Marauders finished fifth this season in league play and were greatly improved overall from their 1-14 record last season.

With first-year coach Rick Lee losing only six seniors to graduation, the future holds promise for the Mariner program.

Before Tuesday’s game, Lee brought in a soccer puzzle and told each player to take a piece.

“When you put all those pieces back together in the puzzle, you’ll be successful,” Lee said.

The Marauders struck first in the 25th minute when Yeegeniy Kann took the ball down the right side of the field, beating two Oak Harbor defenders. Kann then passed to David Cohn, who shot the ball into the left side of the goal, giving Mariner a 1-0 halftime lead.

Mariner scored again in the 41st minute when Oak Harbor’s defense failed to clear the ball from its own territory. The ball struck Mariner’s Mario Rosales square in the face and bounced to the feet of Mike Desimone, who booted it past the Oak Harbor keeper to give Mariner a 2-0 advantage.

Oak Harbor scored a late goal in the 78th minute off a Cody Parker header.
