EVERETT — It was good news bad news for Mariner football fans Friday night as the Marauders (1-1 league, 3-2 overall) captured their first Wesco South win with a 40-6 victory over Cascade (0-1, 0-5) Friday night at Goddard Stadium.
The downside was star running back KeiVarae Russell left the
game in the first quarter with an ankle injury after tallying 43 yards on six carries.
Mariner coach John Ondriezek wasn’t too worried with what he hopes is a minor right ankle injury.
“We will know more in the morning, but it didn’t seem very severe tonight,” Ondriezek said.
After Cascade’s KJ Brady caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Tay’lor Eubanks in the first quarter, the Marauder defense pitched a shutout.
“Defensively our kids really stepped up and we got some turnovers early in the game, which got us some early points,” Ondriezek said.
Mariner reeled off 27 points in the first quarter, capped with a Chrestien Skinner 23-yard fumble return.
Six Mariner players including Russell carried the ball at least five times as the Marauders recorded 373 yards rushing on 54 rushes. Dominique Law led the way with seven carries for 101 yards and a pair of scores. Ondriezek also liked Joshua Williamson’s effort on the evening. The wingback carried the ball eight times for 49 yards and a touchdown.
“Williamson ran hard,” The Mariner coach said. “We were pleased with his performance.”
Brady was the top performer for the Bruins, recording 125 total yards.
