Mariners announce the move: Catcher Moore called up, Johnson optioned

The Mariners have announced what became known yesterday, that catcher Adam Moore is being called up from Class AAA Tacoma and Rob Johnson is being optioned to Tacoma.

Moore isn’t coming up to be a backup. As Roger Hansen, the Mariners’ minor league catching coordinator said yesterday, “He’s ready to come up and prove he’s a starting catcher.”

Here is the Mariners’ news release announcing the moves:

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President &General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today that the Mariners have made the following roster moves.

· C Adam Moore recalled from AAA Tacoma.

· C Rob Johnson optioned to AAA Tacoma.

Moore (#10) will be available for tonight’s game against the Texas Rangers at 7:10 p.m. at Safeco Field. Johnson will be active for the Rainiers game today at 11:30 a.m. vs. Reno.

Moore, 26, has been with Tacoma since he was activated from the Major League disabled list and optioned to the minor leagues on June 25. In 36 games with the Rainiers, including 9 games during his rehab assignment, Moore hit .321 (43×134) with 8 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 15 RBI. Over his last 6 games with Tacoma, Moore hit .400 (10×25) with 2 doubles, 2 home runs and 4 RBI.

Prior to going on the disabled list with a with a sublexed left fibula, Moore was hitting .193 (11×57) with 3 doubles, 1 home run and 4 RBI in 19 games with the Mariners. He made his first Opening Day roster.

Johnson, 28, has appeared in 61 games (57 starts at catcher) for the Mariners this season. He is batting .191 (34×178) with 24 runs, 10 doubles, 2 home runs and 13 RBI.
