The Seattle Mariners made a move to strengthen their bullpen Wednesday morning, announcing the acquisition of relief pitcher Nick Vincent from the San Diego Padres in exchange for a player to be named later.
Vincent, a 29-year-old right-hander, is entering his fifth season in the majors. Last season in 26 relief appearances with the Padres he was 0-1 with 2.35 ERA, walking 10 and striking out 22 in 23 innings. He also spent a substantial time in the minors last season with Triple-A El Paso, where in 40 appearances he was 5-3 with a 3.04 ERA, walking 15 and striking out 68 in 50.1 innings. In his major-league career he’s pitched 150.2 innings, compiling a 2.63 ERA on 39 walks and 161 strikeouts.
Vincent will join a Mariners bullpen that’s a mystery as it’s turned over completely from last season. The only members who appear to be set at this point are closer Steve Cishek, set-up man Joaquin Benoit, left-handed specialist Vidal Nuno and highly-regarded rookie Tony Zych.
Seattle is expected to start the season with seven relievers on its 25-man roster.
