The Mariners finallly have landed someone on a postseason awards list.
While we wait until Nov. 18 to see how Felix Hernandez does in the American League Cy Young voting, Ichiro Suzuki has made it again as one of major league baseball’s best defensive players. He was named the best right fielder in voting of a 10-person panel conducted by the Fielding Bible.
It’s the third time Suzuki has won the Fielding Bible award. Other Mariners on the list? Yeah, right.
The Fielding Bible, authored by Dewan, names the best fielder in the major leagues at each position based on selections made by a panel of experts that includes Peter Gammons, Joe Posnanski, Bill James and Dewan.
There were a couple of noteworthy selections on this year’s list. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, in winning his fourth award, became the first player to be ranked first at his position by all 10 on the judging panel. Also, the Cardinals’ Albert Pujols, a four-time winner at first base, was bounced from the list and replaced by Daric Barton of the Oakland A’s.
Here are the award winners:
First Base—Daric Barton, Oakland Athletics (first-time winner)
Second Base—Chase Utley, Philadelphia Phillies (first-time winner)
Third Base—Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays (first-time winner)
Shortstop—Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies (second-time winner)
Left Field—Brett Gardner, New York Yankees (first-time winner)
Center Field—Michael Bourn, Houston Astros (first-time winner)
Right Field—Ichiro Suzuki, Seattle Mariners (third-time winner)
Catcher—Yadier Molina, St. Louis Cardinals (fourth-time winner)
Pitcher—Mark Buehrle, Chicago White Sox (second-time winner)
