KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Manager Eric Wedge said outfielder Franklin Gutierrez is headed for further medication evaluations after being scratched from a scheduled rehab assignment on Friday night for Class A High Desert.
Gutierrez, who is recovering from stomach gastritis, didn’t feel well enough to play and the club is now formulating plans for the next step.
“I think we’re going to probably end up sending him somewhere,” Wedge said. Wedge said there have been discussions about possibly sending Gutierrez to a national medical center like the Mayo Clinic.
“I know they have talked about that, the Mayo Clinic,” Wedge said.
Before the Mariners headed out for the four-game road trip to Kansas City, Gutierrez seemed ready for the rehab assignment.
“We had those conversations with him before we left. … that he was ready to go,” Wedge said. “Having a setback like that, we’ve got to do something else.”
Gutierrez, a 2010 American League Gold Glove winner, made his last Spring Training appearance on March 19.
